Microsoft quietly shuts down Office Genuine Advantage program

Late last week, with absolutely no public announcement, Microsoft quietly retired one cog in its antipiracy machine.
An anonymous tipster informed me on Friday that Microsoft had shut down its Office Genuine Advantage (OGA) program as of Thursday, December 16. Previously, if you wanted to download an Office add-in or template, you had to pass through a validation step first, confirming that your copy of Office was “genuine.”
Here, for example, is a copy of the Office Genuine Advantage dialog box, circa 2006:

Today, when I visited the templates library at Office.com, I was able to download every template, with no roadblocks standing in my way.
With a little searching, I found official confirmation of the program’s shutdown in a notice tacked on to Microsoft Support Knowledge Base article 917999. At the top of the page, the article was listed as Retired KB Content, with a Last Review date of December 17, 2010. According to the Bing cache, this text was added to the top of the page this week, probably on December 17:
Notice
The Office Genuine Advantage (“OGA”) program has been retired. For more information about the benefits of genuine Office, please visit the following website:
Benefits of genuine Office
The sudden abandonment of the program appears to have taken other parts of Microsoft by surprise. As of this morning, there’s no hint of the OGA shutdown at Microsoft’s official Office Genuine Advantage Validation Issues forum. And if you search Bing for validate office, you’ll turn up a lot of dead links. The first result from Bing is a page entitled “Why validate Office?” But clicking that link,  http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/office/WhyValidate.aspx, leads to Microsoft’s Windows home page. The original page (which is still available in the Bing cache but is not in Google’s cache) contained this text:
To help you verify that you are using genuine Office, Microsoft offers a quick and easy online process called validation.
Validation takes only a few moments, and enables Microsoft to create a match between your PC’s hardware profile and your 25-character Product Key (located on the Certificate of Authenticity), which Microsoft stores and checks against future activation and validation attempts. We do this to ensure that your Product Key is not used by another person in a malicious manner, such as activating a counterfeit or non-genuine copy of Office.
In fact, comparing a cached copy of the Genuine Microsoft Software page from earlier this week with the current contents of that page reveals that the entire site has undergone a complete makeover. The previous version contained links to some 20 separate pages. That page now contains two large graphics—pictures of the boxes for Windows 7 Ultimate and Office Professional 2010, respectively—with a link beneath one promising to help you “learn more” about genuine Windows and Office. The Office link leads to the same generic Benefits of genuine Office page mentioned in the retired KB article.
I tried visiting each of the Office-related links previously available on the Genuine Microsoft Software page. All of the associated pages appear to have been scrubbed from Microsoft’s site. The Validate Windows button still works, but clicking its former companion, Validate Office, just leads to the Windows home page. I’m also told that the Office Notifier, the OGA ActiveX control for Internet Explorer, and the OGA plugin for Firefox are also officially retired.
This week’s change doesn’t affect Office activation, which still requires a 25-character product key and direct contact with Microsoft’s activation servers. It also doesn’t affect Windows validation, which is apparently alive and well and is still required for some downloads, such as Microsoft Security Essentials.
Update Dec-20, 10AM PST: A Microsoft spokesperson provides the following statement:
The Office Genuine Advantage program was designed to notify many customers around the world whether their copy of Microsoft Office was genuine. The program has served its purpose and thus we have decided to retire the program. Given our strong commitment to anti-piracy, we are making several new investments that will allow us to engage with customers and help victims of fraud. If you believe that your Office software may be counterfeit, please visit Microsoft’s How to Tell website. You may also learn more about Microsoft Office products or purchase or download a genuine copy directly. If you have additional questions or otherwise require support on this issue, please contact us for support options.
The spokesperson also confirmed that Microsoft has no plans to decommission Windwos Activation Technologies or Windows Genuine Advantage.

Microsoft: More than 1.5 million Windows Phone 7s sold to date

After weeks of avoiding answering questions about how many Windows Phone 7 devices have been sold since their launch in late October, Microsoft execs have decided to release figures.
On December 21, in an article on its Web site for the press, Microsoft officials said that its phone partners have sold “over 1.5 million phones in the first six weeks” they were available.
Update: This number represents sales of Windows Phone 7 phones from phone makers to carriers. It is not the number of phones sold to customers by the carriers.
Windows Phone 7 devices went on sale in Europe on October 21 and in the U.S. on November 8. In the U.S., only two carriers currently offer the GSM-only phones: AT&T and T-Mobile. In early 2011, Verizon and Sprint are expected to begin selling CDMA Windows Phone 7 devices.
Sales might have been higher, had phone makers and carriers actually provided sufficient stock. Or if phone makers didn’t have to delay shipping models with various technical glitches. But in any case, that 1.5 million figure is quite a bit higher than various (informed and uninformed) estimates I’ve seen.
Microsoft is expected to deliver an update to the Windows Phone 7 operating system in early 2011 that will add support for copy and paste, along with other new functionality. My sources have indicated that a major operating system update, codenamed “Mango,” is coming in the third quarter of 2011 and will include support for Silverlight and HTML 5.
Microsoft execs are not commenting on the company’s future roadmap for the Windows Phone OS. When I asked, a spokesperson provided the following official statement:
“Microsoft will push Windows Phone 7 software updates to end users and all Windows Phone 7 devices will be eligible for updates. As Microsoft has stated previously, they are committed to delivering regular updates to the Windows Phone experience with our partners. We have no further information to share on future updates.”

Using Facial Recognition to Login to Windows

  • windows facial recognition.jpg Windows onlyBoth Windows 7 and Vista (32-bit or 64-bit) users can take advantage of Blink, which is an awesome free utility for letting you login to your computer using facial recognition. It's actually pretty cool how it all works, and in my own testing I was surprised that it could pick me up even with modifications to my appearance.
One of the other cool things about Blink is that you can still login using your normal password, and if you do it will snap a

Computer Technology: Boon Or Bane

Here is a look at a few technologies that we are so used to in our day to day life. Each technology has evolved and made so much of inroads into how we live.
This is a series of articles on each technology and how it is a convenience and a nuisance.
“I think there is a world market for maybe five computers."
 Thomas Watson, chairman of IBM, 1943
From a completely wrong prediction that did not see any value for this invention to a prediction by Intel co-founder Gordon Moore popularly known as Moore's Law, states
“The number of transistors on a chip will double about every two years.”
This invention today has become the core of any business system. Today to do any business without computers is next to impossible. Everything that you see around you is made easy with this wonderful invention that just gets better and better every six months or even less. Every industry now is able to produce faster and much accurately without much human intervention there by reducing many a laborious task in manufacturing a product. To list down the various advantages of this invention would in itself require the use of a computer.
To see the other side of this wonderful invention, we can look at how our lives are controlledby this device. A few years back making simple basic mathematical calculation did not require a device as we were pretty ‘turned on’ to do those calculations in our mind. Now when we need to do some simple basic calculation we resort to an excel sheet or thecalculator program on our computers. Children, 20 years ago would look for opportunity to get out of the house and run around playing and indulging in physical activity. Today with the computers, children are more glued to the information readily available and playing mundane and often bloody games. The children now are so adept at using these devices it is very difficult for the parents to keep a check on them as at times they are better than their parents at handling these devices. 20 years ago to see a child with spectacles was a rarity, today thanks to this great invention; this is a very common site, with most of the children glued to the computer or the television most of the time.
The effort of writing today is completely lost to the ease of a keyboard. Now everythingthat we need to document including this article is on a word editor. What we have lost to this technology in this deal is the art of writing. The personal touch of writing a letter is a thing of the past. Emails have taken over to deliver our thought across the seven seas with the blink of the eye.
Computers have led to automation in most of the industries which could probably do the work of a hundred men single handedly and error free. Although from the industry perspective it does look like a shining cherry, it has led to unemployment which in turn leads to poverty which in turn leads to crime.
Communication was the key on which a family would be bonded, now with the computer being a part of the family most of the communication that the families use to indulge is reduced to a few words or sentences. Most of them are so glued to their work or recreational activity that they have no time to communicate with each other.
One major health hazard that this device has brought about along with all the positive side is the risk of a back ache due to bad posture in using the computer. Then there is the dreaded ‘Computer Mouse Fatigue’ which causes unbearable pain in the arms and is a slow poison in health deterioration.
All this put together, we need to accept the fact that nature has its way with technology and nothing in the extreme can be beneficial. We need to use our resources diligently, if not, the repercussions could be fatal in the long run.
Now let me switch off my computer before it cross the line and cross over to the extreme side.

SPECTRUM SCAM – A Cover up?

The Union Minister of Telecommunications Mr. A. Raja, now being popularly known as SPECTRUM Raja has become a famous personality overnight. The Spectrum Scandal which has cost the government more than rupees 1 lakh crore is supposed to be the biggest scam the country has ever seen.

The Ministry of Telecommunications held by Raja is in charge for the allocation of Spectrum to the companies which offer mobile phone services in the country. In the year 2008, 2nd generation (2G) Spectrum for GSM service providers was allotted to the private players. There were a lot of controversies in the way Spectrum allocation took place by 2008 itself, now the minister’s office is being raided by the CBI for further investigation.
The Minister claims that there is no truth in the allegations against him; he says that whatever procedure was followed in the year 2001 has been adopted by him as well. But there were mere 50 lakh subscribers in the year 2001 compared to 37.5 crore mobile phone users by the end of March 2008; there has been an exponential growth in the Mobile Market which is known to all of us. The fact that the market has grown by leaps and bounds in between 2001 and 2008 is unquestionable.
